James Brown

James Brown, the "Godfather of Soul", whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms, died today (25th Dec) in Atlanta, aged 73.

Brown, whose career spanned six decades, was taken to hospital yesterday with pneumonia, said his agent, Frank Copsidas, and died with longtime friend Charles Bobbit at his side.

Brown’s music was a major influence on modern music, and his work has been sampled by rap artists from the 1980s to this day, his famous 1960s and 1970s break beats becoming the basis of hip hop.

His hit singles include classics such as Out of Sight, Funky Drummer and Say It Loud - I’m Black and I’m Proud, a landmark 1968 statement of racial pride.

Brown won a Grammy award for lifetime achievement in 1992, as well as Grammys in 1965 for Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag (best R&B recording) and for Living In America in 1987 (best male R&B vocal performance.)

Brown, who had his first hit, Please, Please, Please in 1956, earned the nickname "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business" for his tour schedule and number of performances. He was still touring this year, with concerts as far flung as Auckland, New Zealand. Dec 2006

Kim McLagan Dies in Tragic Car Accident

Kim

Kim McLagan, wife of former Small Faces organist Ian, and ex-wife of Keith Moon, was killed in a car accident near Austin, Texas on Wednesday August 2nd 2006.

A native of Bournemouth, Kim was the toast of "Swinging London" in the late 1960s, and appeared in the Beatles' live 1967 telecast of "All You Need Is Love".

She married Moon in 1966, but the marriage was difficult. According to Moon's sidekick Dougal Butler, she received "much GBH on the ears, not to mention actual GBH on various other areas of her person", much of which was witnessed by their daughter, Mandy.

She eventually left Moon and in 1978, the year that Moon fatally overdosed, she married Ian McLagan.  They had no children together. She was 57. Our heartfelt best wishes go to Ian, Mandy and Kim's family.

Boz Burrell Dies aged 60

Boz

Raymond 'Boz' Burrell, founding member and bassist of rock supergroup Bad Company, has died at his home in Marbella.

Born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire on August 1st 1946, he began his musical career in 1963 as a singer in The Tea Time Four with future Small Faces organist Ian McLagan.  The band later changed its name to The Boz People, before Burrell left to join The Sidewinders.  In 1965, he was chosen by The Who to replace Roger Daltrey (sacked for punching Keith Moon), but Daltrey was reprieved and Burrell went on to join Feel For Soul, before a stint in King Crimson.  He co-founded Bad Company in 1973 with Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke from Free and Mick Ralphs from Mott The Hoople, a band that produced such rock anthems as Feel Like Makin' Love and Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love).

Burrell re-joined the original members for a reunion world tour in 1999, but opted out of the 2002 follow up tour.  He died from a heart attack on September 21st 2006.

Who's Who have asked us to pass on their thanks to everyone that helped organise, took part in, or came along to their charity event at The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth on Tuesday 25th July. Punters enjoyed performances by Bootleg Blondie, Danielz of T-Rexstacy (who travelled all the way from Suffolk to appear) and of course Who's Who. A total of £1506 was raised to help Steve Kew, who was also in the audience, get the medication he needs to fight Multiple Sclerosis.
A big thank you to Liverpool Scooter Club for the welcome they gave to our Australian visitors last night, Jacqui and [daughter] Jordan, who are touring Britain on a hired X9 as part of their 4 month European tour. Jacqui and Jordan are also members of Sydney City SC (see Links page). Jacqui is also a member of our Discussion boards, so if you want catch up with their travels, login to say hi. Here's a link to their travel blog http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog/scootergal/scooter06/tpod.html
Who's Who are proud to help organise and participate in, an extremely important fundraising event at The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth. This one off show will be dedicated to a musician called Steve Kew.

Steve Kew was a promising guitar player in the Portsmouth area, and when Gary (lead singer of Who's Who) first got to know him, they played and sang together for a while locally. Some years back now, Steve developed MS. He was a very welcome guest at a Who's Who show some 18 months to two years ago, and although wheelchair bound by then, he enjoyed every moment of it. It is with sadness that we have to report that Steve's condition has now deteriorated to a point where he will die within months, if he cannot receive a drug treatment that just may or may not help him out; but it costs £3000! He is now bedridden in a flat on his own. His mother, who lives nine miles away is the closest family he has. The guy is 46 years old! Any fans of the Small Faces will remember how something similar happened to Ronnie Lane.

The Steve Kew Benefit Concert, will take place at The Wedgewood Rooms on Tuesday 25th July. The acts which will appear are Who's Who, Danielz (T-Rextasy) and Bootleg Blondie. All profits made will go to Steve Kew to enable him to buy the drug Aimspro. More news to follow shortly.

Removed from a patio last Thursday (during day time) from Chance Street (between Redchurch St and Bethnal Green Road) in Shoreditch, East London. It is a Douglas model from 1974. It seems to have been picked up with a van (as exhaust and back wheel were not properly fitted). and taken by at least two people. Old black number plate type / number GYK 140 N [VIN chassis 94465] and a primavera label above back light. if it was taken maliciously and anyone knows of its whereabouts, the owner will be offering a reward for its return.

This was Bryn Owen's 50 Special with a modded V100 engine to help pull the extra weight! It managed a fair few runs in 1983 and it got loads of media coverage, press radio and even on TV. It was 'ditched' late one night and it took 3 people to get it out of the ditch.

Thanks to Bryn for sharing these photos with us.

Legend Desmond Dekker dies of a heart attack

Desmond Dekker

DESMOND ADOLPHUS Dacres, more widely known around the globe as Desmond Dekker, is dead. The ska artiste, who was born on July 17, 1941, in Jamaica, died at his home in the United Kingdom at 4:00 a.m. Thursday.

According to his manager, Delroy Williams, Dekker, who is known for songs such as Israelites, Shanty Town, It Mek, Writing on the Wall and Unity, was not ill prior to his death. "He was not sick; he simply died suddenly this morning from an heart attack."

Derrick Morgan, a close friend of Dekker and the person partially responsible for Dekker's introduction to the world after they recorded Honour Your Mother and Father, also reiterated this notion.

"I was speaking with his sister last Friday and she told me he called and was complaining that he was very tired. He is a man that work everyday of the week and has many shows line up so that is understandable," Mr. Morgan outlined.

Desmond Dekker was probably the best-known Jamaican musician outside of Jamaica before the ascent of Bob Marley in the '70s. In 1968, Israelites topped the U.K. charts and reached the top 10 on United States charts. Mr. Dekker was also the first Jamaican performer to enter U.S. markets with pure Jamaican music, a feat he was never able to repeat throughout his career.

Desmond Dekker has left behind a daughter and a son, other family and friends. According to his official website, desmonddekker.com he is booked until November 18. He had show dates in Poland, Belgium, London, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Czech, Ireland, Switzerland and several other countries.

Piaggio team up with Swarovski to create a unique crystallised Vespa LX in aid of the Breast Cancer Care

Swarovski deployed their expertise with crystal to create a sparkling crystal paint in the Breast Cancer Care shade of pink, adorned with hundreds of Swarovski crystals, including the pink ribbon motif on the front of the scooter. The scooter was displayed in Swarovski's flagship store in Kensington, London, for a month prior to being auctioned at the annual fundraising ball which forms the calendar highlight of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Hosted by the BBC's Natasha Kaplinsky, the one-off LX raised £7,500 - the second highest lot of the evening.

Official Wirral Egg Run 'Cancelled' for Second Year Running

Organisers of the Wirral charity event - that in its 26 years has attracted thousands of bikes and scooters from across the UK and Europe - blame the rising cost of Government safety rules for their decision to scrap the run.  However the event, scheduled for Sunday 2nd April, was also officially scrapped last year yet 1,200 spectators still lined the route and saw more than 800 bikes take part.

The plan for this year's Egg Run was to set off, as usual, from New Brighton promenade and ride to Clatterbridge Hospital collecting Easter eggs and donations en route. People are now being asked to "turn up at Clatterbridge Hospital between 1130 and 1400 on April 2nd" where volunteers will collect donations.

We have to agree with Gareth Sloan of Marriott's Motorcycles in Birkenhead when he says "Many people will be angry it's not officially on" and it "should not be allowed to die."  However we draw the line at his next comment "The Egg Run put Wirral on the map" as we feel the Vikings played a fairly large role in doing that in the 7th Century AD.

Great friends as we are here at vespa.org.uk of Merseyside Police, we can not condone anyone taking part in Ginger's Egg Run on Saturday 1st April, then making a weekend of it by joining any unofficial Wirral "Egg Run" type gathering the following day.  Or something.

Wilson Pickett

Wilson Pickett, one of the greatest Soul singers of all time.
18 March 1941-19 Jan 2006.

Born in Alabama in 1941, Pickett had 10 brothers and sisters in a household heavily influenced by gospel music. His grandfather was a preacher who refused to allow Pickett to sing non-religious songs in the house. In his mid-teens, Pickett moved to Detroit to live with his father, and began to be inspired by local singers such as Jackie Wilson. He gravitated away from gospel singing to join an R&B group called the Falcons, honing his songwriting skills.

He had several early solo hits, including If You Need Me, which went on to be covered by the Rolling Stones and Solomon Burke, with whom he became great friends.

Pickett signed with Atlantic Records in 1964, releasing In the Midnight Hour the following year. The song was said to be co-written by him and Booker T and the MGs guitarist Steve Cropper but later became the subject of a dispute when Pickett claimed he should have been given a sole writing credit.

Other hits during the 1960s included the much-covered 634-5789, Land of the 1,000 Dances and Funky Broadway. As well as raucous soul music, Pickett was also known for his experimental cover versions of songs including the Beatles Hey Jude and Steppenwolf's Born to Be Wild. By the 1970s his popularity and marketability was on the wane, with a switch in labels doing little to revive his music career.

When Irish-set film The Commitments was released in 1991 featuring his most popular songs, Pickett's musical legacy was rejuvenated. The same year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing his role in the history of music.

But around the same time, Pickett's personal life was going through a torrid period. In 1991 he was arrested for driving over a mayor's front lawn while allegedly yelling death threats. He was also charged with assaulting a girlfriend. Two years later he was jailed for one year for hitting an 86-year-old man while drunk-driving. But close friend Solomon Burke said Pickett had turned his life around and they were planning to write and record an album with Ben E King and Don Covay.

Pickett, a father of four, released his last album in 1999, the Grammy-nominated It's Harder Now.

BABYSHAMBLES

Saturday 21st January: Carling Academy Liverpool
Babyshambles have just confirmed a last minute show at Carling Academy Liverpool this Saturday 21st January! Pete Doherty is rarely out of the tabloid press, due to his former tempestuous links with supermodel Kate Moss and his on-off spat with former band member Carl Barat of The Libertines. However, as front-man of Babyshambles, the very talented Pete Doherty and co finally released their debut album, Down In Albion, last year; and if records such as Top 10 hit Killamangiro, and F**k Forever, are anything to go by, Pete Doherty's Babyshambles should now be hitting the headlines for reasons other than his not-so-salubrious lifestyle.
